Challenge yourself on this strenuous, 7-mile hike on the Spur Cross, Tortuga, Elephant Mountain and Dragonfly trails. Trails are rated moderate to extremely difficult, so be prepared for a great deal of loose rock, uneven terrain and elevation change. Please know your experience/fitness level. If this hike is too long or difficult, please consider joining us for one of our other hikes. While out on the trail, we will learn about the ongoing project to catalog the Sonoran Desert’s amazing saguaro cacti. We will be surveying our local population for signs of stress and submitting our observations using the iNaturalist app (participants are encouraged to download the app prior to arriving at the park; few people get a reliable signal in many parts of the park). Please wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring plenty of water (minimum of three liters/person is recommended for this hike). No water is available at the park. Hats, clothes appropriate to the terrain and weather, snacks, electrolytes and sunscreen are highly recommended. Hiking/trekking poles may be helpful. Restrooms are available at the trailhead. NO pets please.
