Guided Butterfly Walk (Registration Required, Limit 12 Participants)

Thursday, September 19, 2024
10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area
44000 N. Spur Cross Road
Cave Creek, AZ 85331

(602) 506-2930 ext 8

Learn about butterflies of Sonoran Desert riparian areas during this guided walk with Ranger Eric. Click on program title for more details.

Join Ranger Eric for a guided walk to look for butterflies following the monsoon rainy season. Along the way, we'll learn about our common species and some identification tips. We can also check out the other plants and wildlife we see along the way. We will hike 1-2 miles on Spur Cross and Metate Trails on easy trail grade, including visiting the solar oasis. Please wear protective clothing or sunblock, wear sturdy footwear, carry ample water and snacks, and bring binoculars or a camera if you have them. Porta-potties are located 200 ft beyond the parking lot. No water available, so bring your own.

MEETING LOCATION: From the main parking at Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area, follow the signs and old road a few hundred feet down to where there are porta-potties and a few picnic tables beneath a ramada. We will meet here for the hike. See park map here: https://www.maricopacountyparks.net/assets/1/6/spur-cross-8x11.pdf

*Please note: Entry to Spur Cross Conservation Area is $3 per person. Annual Pass or CASH are accepted, and exact change is much appreciated. If the fee station past the parking lot is closed, there are iron rangers with envelopes to place your cash payment in.

Limit 12 participants. To register, please call the Cave Creek Nature Center at 602-506-2930 ext. 8 with your name, phone number and number of people attending. If you find you cannot attend a program after you have registered, please call back ASAP so those on the waiting list may be contacted. Registration for this program will close on Tuesday, 9/17.

Please note: Summer programs may be canceled on short notice due to severe weather, including extreme heat events. The Maricopa County Parks website is the best resource for verifying the program’s current status, so please check the program listing prior to departing for your scheduled program.
