Ranger Nikki will lead you on a moderate to difficult hike to enjoy desert views and see plants and animals that live along the wash. We access Malpais Trail via Hedgehog and San Tan Trails to make an 8.8-mile balloon loop. The terrain varies from mostly level to portions that are uneven and rocky with small to medium rocks underfoot. Malpais Trail includes deep sand for approximately 2 miles and has 202 feet of elevation change overall. Hiking poles are recommended for the sand and the distance. This hike is focused on exercise, but we will stop for breaks and talk about nearby plants and animals. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring snacks and plenty of water (recommended 3 liters plus a source of electrolytes). Restrooms and water are available at the Nature Center.
