Have you been avoiding summer hikes because of the heat? There’s a way to enjoy the desert in summer while avoiding the scorching sun. Enjoy hiking under the stars instead on this Night Fitness Hike, where you’ll hike a 4.3-mile loop (round trip), rated moderate, with an elevation gain of 280 feet. The trail winds through scenic desert landscapes, and at the top, you'll be treated to a stunning nighttime view of the city. This program promotes adjusting your routine for the summer heat, helping you feel comfortable and confident while hiking the desert this time of year. We’ll also share tips and recommendations for not getting lost, bitten, or cactus-poked while hiking at night.
Be sure to bring your headlamp or flashlight, wear sturdy closed-toe shoes, and carry plenty of water (electrolyte drink also recommended). A water fountain and bathroom are available at the trailhead staging area where we will meet; it’s also a good idea to have extra cold water and electrolyte drinks in your vehicle for when you return. Snacks for the top, along with a cooling towel or buff, are also recommended to keep you refreshed. Trekking poles may be helpful, but optional. The trailhead is a few miles past the contact station, so please allow extra time to get there (~10 minutes). The contact booth may not be manned, so be prepared with $7 cash per vehicle for self-pay (or display your Maricopa County annual pass). This program is weather-dependent.
